Collar bomb review; Spirited acts by Jimmy, Asha Negi in thriller marred by weak script & poor direction

By Rajesh Ahuja

As the digital screen becomes the new destination for entertainment lovers in the country amid the Covid pandemic,  thrillers have emerged as a predominant genre on various OTT platforms

Collar Bomb on Disney Hotstar is the latest thriller to hit the OTT.
The film revolves around a police officer's attempts to avert a terrorist strike in a residential school.

Parents and students in the grand old residential school, St George located in
the idyllic hill station of Sanawar, are rattled beyond comprehension when a young man appears in the school wearing a clunky steel contraption with wires and gears around his neck and chest.

The young man - Shoeb Ali - has walked into a school with a bomb around his neck. He looks like a merchant of death with peculiar oddness in his approach.

As SHO Manoj Kumar Hesi (Jimmy Shergill), who  is present on the spot,  tries to get on top of the situation, he discovers that Shoeb may not be the mastermind of this situation. SHO Manoj Kumar has to perform three tasks for the mastermind of the terrorist strike if he has to save the life of the children held Hostages by the terrorist.

As Manoj races against time, he is confronted by an evil which is hell bent on striking raw, primal terror. Will he be able to save the lives of the students?

Collar bomb review; Weak script and poor direction mar this thriller

The plot and the story had all the necessary ingredients for an edge of the seat thriller.  However, the makers falter is in the execution of the plot.

For a thriller to hold attention of the audience,  one needs a engaging script that keeps viewers glued to the proceedings and holds constant surprises in store for them.

Unfortunately, the director fails to weave an intriguing script around the plot. Consequently, the film fails to hold attention of the viewers who lose interest in the proceedings midway through the film.

Also, the element of intrigue and suspense, which is a prerequisite for a taut thriller,  is missing in the film.

Another weakness of the film is that many of the happenings seem illogical and without much reason. For example the revelation of the mastermind behind the terrorist attack leaves one confused rather than excited.

The director Dnyanesh Zoting  has failed to translate an interesting plot into an intriguing and an edge of the seat thriller.

On the positive side, however,  the film boasts of excellent cinematography with the locales of Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh coming across as visually appealing.

Performances in the film too leave you largely disappointed, barring spirited acts by Jimmy Shergill and Asha Negi.

Jimmy Shergill,  who plays the central role of SHO Manoj Kumar, puts up a spirited act as SHO Manoj Hesi,  who is battling demons of the past and finds himself racing against time to save lives of school children held Hostage by a terrorist.

Jimmy comes up with brilliant act as Manoj Hesi.  He is,  however, hampered by a weak script . Asha Negi is impressive as the ASI Sumitra Joshi. Jimmy Shergill and Asha Negi managed to shine in a film hampered by a flawed script.

Naman Jain as Manoj's son Akshay,  Ajit Singh Palawat as Ratan Negi, Rajshri Deshpande as Rita and Sparsh Srivastava as Shoeb Ali lend able support.

In a nutshell,  Collar Bomb is a  thriller marred by a weak script and poor direction.

My rating; 2.5/5 - one for interesting story, one for spirited cop acts by Jimmy Shergill and Asha Negi and  0.5 for  cinematography.
